Dr. Joaquim Bellmunt graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in 1982, and gained his doctorate cum laude in 1989 from the same university. He was a resident physician in Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario de la Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona. His background was completed when he gained the European Certificate in Medical Oncology in London in 1989, and spent time with the Clinical Immunology Service, the Medical Oncology Division and the Department of Immunopathology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1987 and 1989. After finishing his residence, he joined the Medical Oncology Service at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital (from June 1988 until December 2005) as head of the Uro-Oncological Unit. In January 2006 he was appointed Head of the Solid Tumour Section at the Medical Oncology Service of the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona.
Dr. Bellmunt is president of the Advanced Bladder Cancer Committee of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and has been consultant to the Genito-Urinary Group (EORTC-GU) since the year 2000. He is co-founder and president of the Grupo Español de Tratamiento de Tumores Génito-Urinarios (SOGUG- Spanish Group for the Treatment of Genito-urinary Tumours). He is also professor of Medicine at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and editorial consultant to the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Oncology, European Urology, European Journal of Cancer, British Journal of Urology Int. and Journal of Urology, among other publicatons. Dr. Bellmunt has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and has made over 100 contributions to books and congresses.
His research fields are genito-urinary clinical oncology, the development of drugs aimed at new therapeutical targets, early-phase clinical and translational research in the area of growth factor receptors and angiogenesis, among others, as objectives in cancer therapy. He is in charge of internationally coordinated trials aimed at the development of new drugs for the treatment of prostate, kidney and bladder cancer. He currently co-ordinates the Intergroup Study into advanced transitional cancer (EORTC 30987). He is engaged on the clinical development of various agents and new combinations and is a member of the advisory board for many types of therapy in the struggle against cancer.
He is a member of the Amercian Society for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM). He acts in an expert advisory capacity for drawing up the Oncoguies (Oncological Guides) for the CatSalut (Health Service) of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Autonomous Government).

Professor Dr. Emili Montserrat is Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona and Director of the Institute of Hematology and Oncology at the Hospital Clínic.
In addition to training and experience in different hospitals in France and England, he was also a visiting professor at the University of San Diego, California. He is a founding member of the International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (IWCLL) and of the European Hematology Association, of which he was at one time president. He is a member of the most important hematological and oncological societies, such as the European Society of Medical Oncology, the American Society of Oncology and the American Society of Hematology and currently is also a member of the International Advisory Board to this latter institution. Furthermore, he is a professor at the European School of Hematology and the European School of Oncology. According to independent sources (International Citation Index, Utrecht University). Prof. Dr. Emili Montserrat is one of the most prestigious specialists worldwide in leukemia and lymphoma, and one of the most cited and renowned Spanish physicians. Likewise he has acted as consultant to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology on subjects concerning biomedicine. He is also an expert on leukemias and lymphomas for theWorld Health Organization (WHO), as well as serving in an expert capacity for different institutions such as the Fondo deInvestigaciones Sanitarias (Spain), the French Cancer Institute (France), the Instituto Nationale dil Cancro (Italy), the Medical Research Council (United Kingdom), the CLL Global Foundation (USA) and the Lymphoma Research Foundation (USA). He has been awarded distinctions and recognition for his scientific work, such as the Severo Ochoa Prize, the Lilly Foundation Award for Clinical Medicine, the Emiram Eldor Medal (Israel) as well as the recognition of Distinguished Researcher from the University of Barcelona.

Nowadays, he is Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva, Swiss. He collaborates with the Centre Européen de Recherche Nucleaire (CERN), he is a member of the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) Brain Tumour Group and Chairman of the Swiss Proton Users Group.
